The objective of “Health is Wealth” is to provide commentary on the United States’ healthcare system by showcasing personal testimonies and experiences through case studies of Southeast Asian-Americans (SEA). SEA are underrepresented in much of “Asian-American” research, but they are a community of people who have experienced first-hand the costly demands of healthcare access. These are communities of which many have been a part of low-income and underinsured families. As the number of insured SEA rises, I asked three people to participate in an interview — detailing their personal healthcare costs and opinions on U.S. healthcare. Fitting to how convoluted the healthcare system is, there is no answer to navigating care in America the “right” way. It’s all about what you can afford and playing with the chances of change to your income or livelihood.
